Baby Crisp's Nursery

Over the past few months we have really enjoyed working on our nursery together. Since we don't know when we may get "the call" we wanted to be as prepared as we can be, and so that meant we had to get moving! Since we are on a budget and we really wanted to do a lot on our own, we have learned to do many things through this process ... thanks to some online tutorials, blogs and YouTube videos.

Our goal was to create a space that fits our style and the rest of house with clean lines and energizing colors and isn't too "baby". Since we don't know if our baby will be a boy or a girl, we needed to make the space gender neutral. At first, we felt like this might be boring (there's typically just a lot of tan in gender neutral nursery decor.) But, as we brainstormed about how we wanted the room to turn out (thank you, Pinterest!), we realized that going gender neutral allowed us to incorporate all of the colors of the rainbow. We decided to go with charcoal walls and white furniture. The darker walls really make the furniture and art POP!

Let's start from the beginning ... We found this piece of artwork on Etsy and it became our inspiration piece! We absolutely love it!

Here are two other pieces that we purchased on Etsy. Notice on the right, there are three little golden yellow birds in the tree.

The next piece was inspired by some artwork that we saw online that used song lyrics for art and we thought, "Hey, we can do that!" and so we did!

Once we decided on artwork, we needed to find some fabric. We went to quite a few fabric stores, but couldn't decide on anything. Thankfully, we were able to find some great fabrics online that really fit the look we were going for.

We used this first fabric to make a crib skirt. Thanks to a blog we read, Young House Love, we found a great technique for making a crib skirt with iron-on bonding vs. sewing. It was super easy! The grass green color is quite cheery and the print is a fun, modern geographic print.

In the next picture you can see the crib skirt on the crib and the artwork that is hanging above the crib. The shelf on top will eventually hold a few personal pictures. All of the frames and the shelf came from IKEA. They have such great deals on these items! We went with a short BabyMod crib and we're really happy with it! Can't wait to use it!

In the next picture you can see Brett hanging the cornice board that we made to go above the window in the room. We were originally thinking of using this fabric for something else, but it works really well for the cornice board since it is such a large print.

The next picture shows the view into the room from the doorway. In this picture you can see the shelving unit/window seat that we installed. We purchased it at IKEA also and it is going to be great for storage. We were worried that it would make the room feel too small since it practically takes up that entire wall, but the room actually feels larger now than it did previously! The chair is also from IKEA and was originally just a plain, slip-covered armchair. We converted it to a swivel-rocker by mounting a rocking mechanism to the bottom of the chair. It was a little more complicated than it should've been because of the way the base of the chair is built, but after a little brainstorming and improvising, it works perfectly!

One of Brett's co-workers helped us out by covering the cushion and bolster pillows on the window seat. We ordered the bright yellow chevron fabric online and found the solid orange fabric at a local fabric store. We love all of the fun patterns and bright colors!

We found the little zebra at Pier One and just couldn't resist!

We sanded down and re-painted a small dresser that we were previously using in our guest bedroom to use as a changing table. We aren't sure if we love the current hardware, but that will be an easy swap if we decide we want to change it later.

So, that's our new nursery and we are looking forward to the day when we'll get to put it to use!
